Specialized Cardiac Care for Women

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women, accounting for one in three deaths annually - about one woman every 80 seconds. However, there's hope: according to the American Heart Association, up to 80% of heart attacks and strokes can be prevented through education and proactive lifestyle changes.

Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors

Women have unique cardiovascular risk and symptoms, yet many do not understand what these are.

Even healthy women are more susceptible than men to conditions like spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) and microvascular disease. Several factors can exacerbate a woman’s cardiovascular risk, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Genetic history
  • Kidney disease
  • Onset of menopause
  • Poorly-managed stress
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Smoking

Cardiovascular Disease Symptoms in Women

There are differences in the way men and women experience cardiac events. When you think of a heart attack, symptoms like chest pain and shortness of breath probably come to mind. But that’s not always the case for women. In fact, many women don’t even realize when they are having a cardiac event.

Similar to men, the most common heart attack symptom in women is chest pain. However, not all women experience this. Women are more likely than men to have other, less obvious symptoms, including:

  • Flu-like symptoms and nausea
  • Heartburn or indigestion
  • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach
  • Shortness of breath

Structural heart specialists

Any time an abnormality or defect weakens the heart’s structure – its walls, valves and muscles — it’s referred to as structural heart disease. In a healthy heart, the four valves work together to move blood from the upper to the lower chambers, pushing it out to the lungs and other organs. One or more defective valves can affect the heart’s normal function and may lead to serious health complications.

Structural heart defects can be treated through traditional open-heart surgery or through several minimally invasive procedures. In our state-of-the-art catheterization labs, the interventional cardiologists at Appledore Medical Group are among the region's most skilled, using the latest technologies to provide the best possible care to our patients.
