New Drug Available for Cluster Headaches

Dr. Matthew Robertson, neurologist with Appledore Medical Group, recently spoke with Seacoastonline.com regarding the FDA's approval of a new drug to treat cluster headaches, some of the worst headaches one can experience.

The Mayo Clinic offers the following description: “Cluster headaches, which occur in cyclical patterns or cluster periods, are one of the most painful types of headache. A cluster headache commonly awakens you in the middle of the night with intense pain in or around one eye on one side of your head.”

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Emgality, a drug that has been used for migraine headache sufferers, to treat cluster headaches and doctors say they are excited and hope to be able to provide better relief for their patients.
